Over the six weeks I have been pretty slack on the blogging front. When I started in 2011 I started it as a hobby. I had no idea what I was doing, I had no idea about anything technical. I still don’t really. Every now and then I get bored. I get bored with the layout and I get bored with the design. Its funny as I can never stick to one thing. I am still in the tweaking stages and I am deleting and adding things as I go along.

Last week I sat and looked at the blog for a very long time and I decided to take it offline on Friday, not really knowing what I was going to do. I like clean line, simplistic designs and nothing to heavy. I have come to realise a few things whilst giving it a re-design that sometimes simplistic things are not to be messed with. For instance photos. Ever sine I have had a iPhone I use three major apps to edit my photos. I have, for a very long time liked the white borders, BUT that needs to change as the blog just doesn’t sit well with those rather large, ugly borders and sometimes just a little edit here and there on the photograph will be all it needs.

I have also come to realise that its no good comparing blogs. I literally have a wanderlust list of blogs that I adore and I wish I could be just as good as them, {blog design wise!} but that, again is never going to happen. I should look at mine and be proud that I did it, it may not be up to some standards but for me its a labour of love and although at times I have screamed at the screen in frustration that things don’t go my way I think I have done a pretty good job at getting it to this stage.

I spent all day yesterday working on the blog, changing the design, the template the colours only to find out at the end that the whole site in itself was running painfully slow due to the template. I was pretty disheartened and ended up reverting all my hard work to the template I was previously using. I have tidied it up, changed the colours from pink to a nice dark aubergine, and added a few bits to it to make it more user friendly. I have a new menu at the top with easy link to posts and I have certain parts I really love about the blog. Sometimes a freshen up is all it needs.

Whilst having a re-design I have also decided what I want to blog about. Up until now its been a bit sporadic and I tend to jump at any review that is thrown my way, but I think I am going to really consider reviews and what I will take on. I want this to be a family lifestyle blog, one that people can click into and pick up where they left of and feel like they have never been away. I want it to flow nicely and generally be a good read. I also want to carry on raising some kind of awareness to skin cancer so you can expect more posts about my health and my melanoma journey.

I have also had a massive clean up. I didn’t realise how much of a fan of plugins I was! So I have deleted ones I don’t use and don’t like. I have also been through old blog posts, tidied those up and cut down on my categories and tags. The amount of tags and categories I had was unbelievable and I am still currently going through them to make it a lot tidier. I also have deleted an endless amount of Themes that are sitting in my appearance folder. I am a hoarder!

I have an image in my head of what I have always wanted the blog to look like and even though I am my own worst critic I think I have it to where I want it, although deep down I will always find something to tweak and make better. There are a few things I wanted to added but I just can’t figure it out at the moment so I am going to leave it and maybe come back to it at another time. Overall I am happy with the way its looking.

This has become an ordinary part of my life now. Blogging is second nature and one I don’t think I will ever give up. I just need to be more consistent and push myself to try harder!

  • I think it looks very clean and crisp – I think the tweaking is just part of the fun of having a blog. I’ve only given mine a major overhaul two or three times but I play with little bits here and there and I think the way we present our blogs is as much a part of the fun of blogging as the writing. For what it’s worth, I got to a point where I just couldn’t make it look like the picture in my head, and commission a blog header from someone a lot more talented than me and I’ll love it for a long long time 🙂

    • Thank you Carie, I think I will always tweak and play around with it and I agree when it works and goes to plan its part of the fun of blogging {Thank-you for letting me know about the comment box too!}

  • It looks great lovely- really clean and modern, and easy to read which is obviously the most important thing. I had a little blog refresh as you know a while ago and I definitely think it does wonders for my motivation and energy when it comes to blogging. It is such a big part of my life and I think it is good to channel a little energy into the look of it every now and again. I know wha you mean about comparing your blog to others designs- I do the same! x

  • I love the new look and it looks very simple and clear (in a good way). I desperately need to have a refresh of mine, I want to do a few tweaks and change the colour and I’m hoping now that O is in school I will get some time to play around with it. I’m with you on the reviews thing, I’ve accepted too many recently and now have a back log and I don’t want to end up with a blog full of reviews. I really need to be more picky! Loved this post xxx
